While parents worked, we were able to steal away a couple days with D and enjoy Powell's Books, one of the largest book stores we've every visited and certainly the most charming, then stock up on goodies at another very large store near Powell's in the Pearl District, Whole Foods. We have Whole Foods here in the Valley, but this store in the Pearl District is one I thoroughly love visiting.
The highlight of the time with D was visiting OMSI (Oregon Museum of Science and Industry). What a treasure for the people of Portland and especially for families! This museum has great variety and many hands-on exhibits. We spent several hours there and didn't explore the entire museum. We did watch an OMNIMax movie, Sea Rex, which was fun and informative. There's still lots to do on another trip, like the Submarine tour.
When D took off to enjoy a couple birthday parties, it gave the "grown ups" a little time to enjoy two more of Portland's finest: Kell's Irish Pub and The Saturday Market.
Papa and I stumbled upon Kell's a couple years ago when we visited. It was a Sunday evening and we wanted a quick meal before relaxing for the night. As we savored our meal by the warmth of the fireplace, people came in with violins and other instruments. Soon an inpromptu concert of Celtic music began. Apparently local musicians gather informally on Sunday evenings at Kell's to share a wee bit of musical fun and we were the benefactors. It was fun to go back to Kell's again even though there wasn't any music on Friday evening.
Saturday Market is a fun crafts fair. Not only are the wares very intriguing, but the people sharing their crafts and those attending are so diverse that people watching is amazing. I could just sit with a hot cup of something and watch/listen to the lessons of life for many hours there. Of course, being along the water front with the ships and activity ain't too bad either.
